When planning a barn party there are several things to keep in mind. First, not all horses are well suited to being dressed up, so test anything that makes noise or is unusual ahead of time. Always be sure to plan activities that include everyone, especially non-riders and those who don’t own their own horses. Also be careful with the horse treats as many people have a tendency to overdo it.
Horse Halloween Costumes
A great way to get the whole barn involved is planning out costumes for horses and riders, followed by a parade and a costume contest to be sure that people really get into the spirit of the Holiday. Dressing up horses can be tricky though since many of them do not particularly enjoy having odd things stuck to them. One idea that doesn’t involve changing too much on the horse is to dress them up as a famous horse and rider, such as Seabiscuit and his jockey. Another option is applying safe non-toxic washable paint to the horse and dressing as a zebra, a cow, a Dalmatian, or even a hippy. If the horse is okay with having odd things near/on its head another idea would be to attached antlers to the bridle and have the horse be a moose or a reindeer. The ideas for a horse costume are limitless. Just remember that riders still need to wear helmets and appropriate riding clothes
Horse Games
Barn parties are all about having a good time, and games are a great way to do that. Games on horseback could include relays, kept to a slower pace for less experienced riders and rowdy horses, or a contest to see who can get off and back on their horse the quickest without the aid of a mounting block. If the barn is a large facility a spooky treasure hunt could be set up, complete with creepy hints and prizes at the end. Other game ideas include having riders ride around the ring with a dollar bill under their thighs attempting to keep the bills in place, or a relay in which each rider carries something that must not be dropped or spilt, such as a hardboiled egg in a spoon or water in cup.
