The Famicom had been around for three years when Metroid was first released (though it would be much later for the rest of the world). The story revolves around the heroine Samus Aran, a bounty hunter sent by the Galactic Federation to Planet Zebes to wipe out an alien organisation called the Space Pirates.
But with the carnivorous Metroid, brought to the planet by the Space Pirates from SR388, set loose on Zebes, Samus has her work cut out for her. Her encounters with the Space Pirates and the Metroids would continue for years after their original meeting, with battles on a galactic scale.
